From Lab to Vineyard: Tech Transfer from WSU CPAS Gives Winegrape Growers a New View

A creative collaboration among the WSU Center for Precision Agricultural Systems (CPAS), Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, and Infrared Image Solutions Inc. of Hermiston , Oregon has provided tools to growers that were previously unavailable. Through this collaboration CPAS has been able to transfer expertise and technology in remote sensing which is being used by Ste. Michelle for harvest planning and other tasks.

CPAS

In 2003, Eileen Perry of CPAS started working with Tad Fickel of Infrared Image Solutions to install a multi-spectral imaging system that she integrated with a computer and data acquisition system into small fixed wing aircraft. She also developed calibration panels that the pilot flies over in order to correct the imagery for changes in sun angle and camera settings. This camera system is being used by Infrared Image Solutions in conjunction with their thermal imaging camera system. Initially, Eileen Perry provided Ste. Michelle with processed imagery that could be ingested directly into their GIS database. This year, she advised the company on the purchase of compatible image processing software, and trained Jennifer Smithyman, who manages the GIS, so that she can now perform all the necessary image processing in house. Details on the processing and final products can be seen here.
