Orientation to Program
Overview of class schedule and course formats. Dates, times and locations will be reviewed. The general format of the program will be explained as well as goals of the certificate program.

Grapevine Anatomy & Physiology
This course will focus on elements of physiology that will enhance the students’ understanding of vine function and how it relates to grape production. The course will cover basic concepts in growth and development, water relations, photosynthesis, mineral uptake and utilization, and cold hardiness.

Growing Grapes in Eastern Washington
Basic elements of study include the economic realities of grape growing, site considerations, plant material, planting a vineyard, canopy management and cold protection. Weed management will also be included.

Principals of Plant Pathology/Identification, Epidemiology, and Management of Fungal Diseases
The general principles of plant pathology will focus on the origin, life cycle and management of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and bunch rot.

Nematodes of Grapevines
Learn about the life and disease cycle of nematodes on grapes, as well as managing nematodes by chemical and biological control. Field day will include soil sampling followed by lab extraction and identification.

Viral & Non Fungal Diseases of Grapes
A brief introduction to the major virus-like agents that infect grapevines and pathogens transmitted through propagation. The impact on and management of vines affected by these pathogens will be discussed.

Insects & Mites and Their Management
An introduction to the identification, biology and management of grape pests in Washington. Learn how to recognize mite and insect pests and their natural enemies and to minimize pesticide applications through adoption of Integrated Pest Management principles.

Principals of Soil & Nutrient Management
An introduction of soil science with an emphasis on soil physical and chemical properties. Practical guidance and concepts covered are nutrient management strategies and needs for newly planted and established vineyards; irrigation water quality and quantity management as related to soil and nutrients.

Principals & Practices of Grapevine Irrigation
Learn the basic elements of irrigation systems, irrigation timings, and efficient water management for vineyard production.

Viticulture & Enology Interface
Wine production and quality are bound to vineyard management. Principles of fruit quality, winemaking, and wine quality will be examined with a focus on integrating grape production with wine quality.

Economic & Business Principles of Growing Grapes
Students will be introduced to a wide range of business and economic aspects of viticulture and enology. Topics include investment costs and analysis in vineyards and wineries, as well as projecting financial returns through cash flow analysis. Participants will develop financial and economic foundations to improve decision-making.
