Overview
The Professional Enology Certificate consists of a series of nine science-based courses held over a two year period. The classes are offered online, with three required weekends of hands-on experiences ('camps'). The certificate is awarded upon the successful completion of courses and attendance at requried camps.
The content and quality of the courses are intended for those you plan to work in the wine industry either as a winemaker or as a winery owner/winemaker. The emphasizes is on the science of winemaking. Therefore, the courses are rigorous and require a serious time committment. Students are expected to have taken college level chemistry and microbiology courses, and have reviewed them, if necessary.
The Instructors are drawn from Washington State University specialists and technically oriented members of the Washington wine industry. Students will tour wineriers and visit with owners and head winemakers. Some of the wineries that students visited in 2009 were Thurston Wolfe Winery, Airfield Estates Winery, Col Solare, Maison Bleue, DavenLore, Vine Heart, Chinook, Hedges Cellars and Hightower Cellars.
Class size is limited to 40 participants to facilitate the student-faculty experience. Priority for registration will be given to those currently working in the Washington wine industry and to residents of Washington State.
