Viticulture and Enology at Washington State University

VineWeb

Overview

The Viticulture Certificate Program consists of a series of 11 online courses held over a two-year period. The classes are offered online, with three required weekends of hands-on experiences ('camps') held in Prosser, Washington. The certificate is awarded upon the successful completion of courses and attendance at requried camps.

The Grape Camps provide an opportunity for hands-on experiential learning to add to the material provided on-line, provide students with a networking opportunity with instructors and classmates, and give students and opportunity to tour some of the leading vineyards in Washington State. In 2009 students visited with Dick Boushey from Boushey Vineyards, Russell Smityman from Chateau St. Michelle, Jim Holmes from Ciel du Cheval, and Jim Williams from Kiona Winery.

This program emphasizes the science of growing grapes. Students are expected to have taken a college-level Botany or Plant Bioloy course. The rigor and quality of the programs is intended for those professionally oriented to viticulture. Course materials will average a minimum of the equivalent of a 300 (junior/senior) level academic course.

Class size is limited to 40 participants to facilitate the student-faculty experience. Registration priority will be given to those currently working in the Washington wine industry and to residents of Washington State.

We do have an extensive waiting list. If you are considering taking this program in the future, you should put your name on the waiting list now.
